The word 'Eucharist' is derived from the Greek word eucharistia, which means ‘to give thanks’. The term is said to have been originated in the 1st or 2nd century A.D. as the early Christians commemorated the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with thanksgiving. Christians worldwide participate in the Eucharist, also known as Mass, or the Lord's Supper. They Participate and welcome Christ in their hearts by consuming the sacred host, which represents Christ's body, and in some cases depending on the celebrant of the Eucharist, by drinking a small amount of wine, which represents the blood of Christ. By eating the bread and drinking the wine, Christians commemorate Christ's 'Last Supper' and are reminded of his Passion and death on the cross.
According to the Bible, the night before Christ was crucified, he instituted the Holy Eucharist. Jesus Christ and his twelve apostles sat down and ate a meal of bread and wine. During the meal, Jesus instructed his disciplines to eat and drink of the bread and wine which represented his body and blood and asked them to do it in his remembrance. The bread symbolizes the crucified body of Jesus Christ, while the wine symbolizes the blood of Jesus Christ. Christians worldwide believe that Christ's death on the cross is the means by which salvation is brought to the human race.
